DUI distributor power source

Was wondering what the best place is to pick up 12 volts for my new DUI distributor. Working on a 79 Wagoneer with a 360 engine. The attached pic shown has the fuse box at the firewall and the connectors at the ignition box. I figured one of those wires would be good. Also does everyone recommend removing all the old wiring from the engine harness or cutting off the connectors and sealing up the ends with heat shrink? Any advise is appreciated.

The big fat red wire should provide the requirements. Confirm it is hot when the ignition is on. Another option is to add a relay that uses a source from the battery and a trigger from an 'ignition on' source.

Like will e says, that big Red wire that went to the old ignition module will power your HEI just fine.

Thanks guys. Any opinions on removing the old wiring to clean up the harness. Those barrel connectors at the ignition box, distributor are hideous.

If you're eliminating the Duraspark system, and you're not going to use it again, I'd say pull it out. Can't cause you headaches later, unless for some reason you decided to put the Duraspark back in, in which case it'd be a massive headache. If you're confident that you're eliminating it, get rid of the harness.

Otherwise you end up with this whole string of plugs, and it looks bad, and if you ever run into electrical issues, you have an even harder/more frustrating time finding it.
