New Zealand ’76 Cherokee Chief Steel wheels

Post by Trosskyll »

Hi All.

I am looking for confirmation of correct wheel size, for my '76 Cherokee Chief

1x GM / Chevy K5 Blazer type 10 hole 15x8 6x139.7 Rallye steel wheel rim. Or, was this Mopar Rally. I can't quite find that out.
These are what is on my truck, but I only have 4, so I would like one as a spare.

5x 8 spoke rims . Again, I think they should be 15x8 6x139.7

Just checking I have the correct spec here:
15x8 wheel size
6x5.5 Lug pattern (or 6x139.7mm)
90mm Center bore (can be larger @ 108mm?)
3.5" Backset - or 3.75" (I don't think it is 4" or 4.25" - or is it?)
- 19mm offset.

I would like to buy these if anyone has them for sale?
These OEM style rims are impossible to find in NZ.

I found this dealer on FB - but has anyone purchased from him? Is he reliable, legit, honest and trustworthy?
Is this guy a Legit Dealer.jpg
I have a postal address for shipping within the USA, and I will take it from there to myself in New Zealand.
Looking forward to you help!
Alberto :)

I'm pretty sure those first wheels you show are Square Body Chevy wheels--I don't have any but I can look around the salvage yards and stuff around here if you want.

Those wagon wheels are pretty easy to come by in the US; may be kind of pricey but they're not hard to find.

You have the 6x5.5 (6x139.7) lug pattern right. The 90 mm bore is also correct, although the bigger 4.1" or whatever will also work (not 100% sure your existing caps will work with that--they SHOULD but I can't say for sure). 15x8 is possible--I suspect 15x7 is stock, but I've read that there are rumors of 15x8s from the factory. On these a 15x8 will be good; 15x7 or 7.5 would be ideal for the 30x9.5 and smaller, but an 8" will work for most applications. Anything bigger than a 30 and the 8+" is better anyway.

I'm not sure on the backspacing there, sorry. I wish you luck in your search, lemme know if I can help!

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

For the 1976 FSJ models, there was a shortage of 6 lug spoked wheels. For most of the 76 production, AMC/Jeep used the GM 15x8" wheel typically used on 4wd Blazer, Suburban and C10. Jeep caps were put on them. This was for the WT Cherokee and Jtrucks. As far as I know, they were all painted white and were without stainless trim rings.

I would suggest trying to find wheels with the 90mm center bore. Larger bores will work, but then they are no longer hub centric. Lug centric wheels tend to have vibrations at speed unless you get the lugs tightened perfectly even.

Not sure on the guy you posted about. No experience there.

But the GM rally wheels are readily available on eBay and such (Just search for "K10 rally wheel"). Then you at least have eBay buyer protections.
