Purpose of the hole? - Plug or leave open

Post by Laredo Matt »

Does anyone know the purpose of the hole? When I tore the jeep down they weren't sealed or plugged.

Image

I have some grommets I can use to seal them but would like to know if it serves a venting or other purpose before doing that.

TIA .... matt

interesting, mine was plugged, but I did not try to check what type of material and how secured it was bonded.

That is interesting. It almost looks like a metal plug from the picture.

Question - you had your outer fenders removed with the doors on. Do you have 45 or 90 degree hinges? I have 45 degree and getting to the bolts and having room to mount / remove with the door on is nearly impossible. I just have the doors pulled but that's a pain as well with all the wiring in there now. If it is easier with 90-degree hinges, I may order a set and swap to make future maintenance easier.

Mine had these plugged with grommets on my ‘72. I drilled small holes in them for a door jamb switch addition.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like either is fine. I think I'll add grommets since I know closed is an option as well.

Thank you.

On one hand, encouraging as it means I should be able to get the outer fenders on and off in the future without removing the doors. On the other hand, makes me feel a little silly since I recently concluded I had to and did pull the doors to get the fenders back on :D

About the hinges, I feel your struggle with the 45-degree ones. They can be a bit tricky for maintenance, especially with doors on. Switching to 90-degree hinges might make things a lot more convenient for future work.

I just tore down my '77 Cherokee. Mine had the door jamb switch wiring running through them. Also, wiring for door speakers. I believe a much later addition however.
