Stepside CAT diesel project

Post by rocklaurence »

OK, I hate to start this thread because I'm sure that there will be delays and I hate it when persons talk a Big Game but never follow through (like me and my Loredo diesel project) but here it goes. :ugeek: This is a Shop Project being built-to-sell with a 4.4L CAT motor. Presently, we have the drive train pulled and are using Chevy axles and 700R4/Tcase. I don't need to hear how the axles, frame, etc, etc are too light (they're not for what this is for) as the motor is rated at 160HP/400lbtq and approx 900lbs. We're going to paint it satin CAT yellow with black accents to maintain the Heavy Equipment theme. So, I've committed by posting and will have pic soon. ;)

Sounds like a cool project! Plenty of people have swapped in 4BT and 6BT engines. No really difference here.

Looking forward to photos!

The CAT is available from my dad. He salvaged it from a Large wood chipper. So, all I have to do is pick it up, find out if its an ASE2 or 3 for the adapter and drop it in. I would have posted pic today but I forgot my camera during my travels today. :x

Caterpillar and IH Scout enthusiast, Jeff Rotella, began work on dropping a Cat 3054C in a custom built Scout Terra.
This posting is awesome, with lots of great details.

Sadly, Jeff Rotella was killed in a work-related accident.

I'm interested in how this project is gonna go. As a diesel mechanic by training and a maintenance manager for a pretty diverse fleet that will sell obsolete equipment to employees, I'm always kicking around off the wall ideas for conversions. It will probably get me in trouble someday.

OK, picked up the motor today and contacted Phoenix Castings for an adapter. Ill have to pull off the power unit and take some measurements etc for the SAE/GM adapter. Once I have that then I can place it in the vehicle to mock-up motor mounts etc.

I would not be surprised if it actually is a perkins. But it would be so awesome to lift the hood and see "Caterpillar" written on top of the engine :)

nah, thats the water pump. They are rebuildable, which is why it has a cover that can be removed. The injector pump is towards the back.

I would call a place that sells cat motors. They can probably get the data for it.

I've requested the transmission adapter from Phoenix castings and when it gets here we'll drop it in the frame. The project is still ON
