I am envious.
My DD is my WJ and I've been struggling with the need to make some repairs...
...like the transmission needs some work (governor pressure solenoid valve and transfercase seals); rotten exhaust, front pinion bearing, etc..
I had once thought that my '82 J10 would be my new DD, but I am long ways from that.

I had just looked at a '04 Dodge RAM 2500 powered by a Cummins.
It was nice, loaded with everything, leather, 4 doors, fifth wheel hitch, short wheelbase, but was only 2WD. :-(

I have found a place where I can get 5.2 LS take outs with everything for $700.00.
Heck, even a 4.8 with a 5 speed manual would work and may cost less too.

4.8 would make plenty of power for you. Had one in my 03 truck, never missed a lick and got better mileage than a 5.3.
