What's this?

Post by Seemoore »

Rubber tube from my rear axle to the frame. After the SOA it's not long enough. Came loose the first time I drove it. What does it actually do?

That's your differential breather. They put the breathers there to help with shrinking and expansion in the dif when the oil heats up or cools down. Its extended to keep water from getting in the dif. The way I see it, the higher it is the better it is. And its a cheap and easy fix

Good to know. Is there a special sort of hose I should use to replace that? I can't remember seeing a fitting on either end but there had to be something holding it on to frame.

As far as I know, a simple piece of rubber fuel line would work fine. They usually have a little plastic cap on the end to keep water from splashing in, but those aren't too hard to find if you're missing that. Also, there's one for the front differential that is (atleast mine is) mounted on the passenger side of the radiator. If you lifted it and the back one is too short, the front probably is too

If you do a lot of water crossing, then your going to want them as high as you can get them. I have seen the run to the top of the fire wall...

yeah it's a snorkel. the little place cap is suppose to be a one way valve. it's primary purpose it to let the differential breath so the don't pressurized when hot & push oil out the seals.

Any rubber will do it's good to have the snorkels. Yes like everyone says as high as possible.

Yup, it's just a vent tube, but an important one. There's one on your front diff. too, or there's supposed to be. But don't use rubber tubing, the 90 weight gear oil will eat it up if any gets into the tube, best to ask the parts guy for fuel hose made of Neoprene or Buna N.
