Under hood lighting

Post by ScottsMojo »

This is what I played around with this afternoon. I purchased a couple Led strip lights a couple years ago when I built a custom license frame bracket/light for the Duc. I had only used 6 LED's on the bike which left me with quite a bit of material left over. There are 15 LED's per side, mounted on the hood bar at approx 45*. I might end up cutting the strips ad distributing the LED's equally along the length but not sure. They put a nice amount of light into the engine bay as is. To finish up I will utilize a ball or mercury switch, which ever I run across first. I will also cover the LED strips with clear heat shrink as I don't think the adhesive will live long under the hood.

So weigh in lemme know what y'all think!

I think it looks pretty cool. Only thing I would be concerned about is the heat. Not all plastics hold up to it.

Now you need a way to turn them on from inside the cab. Then you could have some hip street lighting to impress all the street racers :P

The lights are encased in silicone, the strips are very flexible. My concern is the adhesive which if should fail they will still be held in place with the clear heat shrink.

But time will tell, I will report in 6 months to the condition... (Edit) I think when I install the foil faced insulation it will better reflect the light

Hmm, cool? Hip? Switch? Would multi-color LED's in the fenderwells and under the frame suffice? :D

A few appropriately place tie-wraps will solve any adhesive issues without blocking any light.

Yes, wire ties are at the ready should the clear heat shrink not work as expected.

This isn't a bad idea, although I was thinking more of just getting a couple under hood lights from the junkyard and rigging a couple up. One small light is never enough. :)

These are really working out nicely. They put out plenty of light and draw almost no current.

Those should work too! I got mine @ one of the box stores, don't recall which, about three years ago for a different project. I had what you see left over and thought this would be a good use of the lights.

So, was at a car show and there was this really sharp 65 Cheby shortbed, lots of people milling around. We were in line waiting to get the kids a hot dog and when finished I walked over to take a look. Really sharp truck, and under the hood he had....

Whats the relevance here? I've no clue...

Oxymoron

You can't use 65 Cheby shortbed in a sentence without knowing the answer.

I have a 12 volt trouble light with leds. It clips onto the battery. I keep in the console because the light is never where the problem is. It really comes in handy when the problem is underneath.

This looks cool. The heat will make the acrylic yellow & brittle very quickly.

Hey Jeff,
They are holding up great so far! No problems and the adhesive seems to tolerate the engine compartment temps just fine. Very happy with the results!
