Glenn's 76 Cherokee TBI swap

Post by Renodemona »

IMG_0959.JPG
Greetings! Thought I would post up a thread of my swap. Probably not going to be as informative as Jason's, but I will try and put photos of every step to document the swap. This isn't a "how too" so much as "this is what I did" so if it works out well, hooray! If not, well, at least we know what not to do.

These are the adapter plates and throttle body test mounted to make sure everything clears. The Temperature sensor was mounted in a vacated hole from a deleted vacuum temperature switch on the passenger's side of the water bridge at the front of the intake. You could use the hole from the stock temperature sensor too if you need to keep that vacuum stuff for emissions reasons. I don't have emissions test on my vehicle, so it is all gone!

Will that work - to put a 2V throttle body adapter on top of the 4350 adapter? I expect the throttle body adapter expects an open plenum underneath it, to be suitable for a square-pattern 4V manifold. I expect you'll be seriously down on power with all that aluminum blocking the bottom of the throttle body. You could grind out the center of the 4350 adapter to make a plenum under the throttle body.

Good point, TIm. I hadn't even noticed that! Not only will it block air, it will block the valves from opening. You could hog it out with a grinder, I guess. It wouldn't look pretty, but it would work.

CRT Performance HEI distributor all in one. 2 wire system, I'm not running timing with the EFI. A couple of people have pointed out the lack of space under the adapter. I will probably have to take a grinder to it to get the valves to open fully. I also thought about just getting a second plate and stacking them. (which would be prettier but more $$$)

Unless you're already obtained the HEI, I'd really consider full timing control. Since you're doing a DIY system, you're going to have to tune it. Might as well add timing control to the mix, too!

And even if you DO have the HEI, I'd really consider full timing control. Since you're doing a DIY system, you're going to have to tune it. Might as well add timing control to the mix, too!

You can retain the stock distributor with the vac advance plugged and the mechanical advance locked out. You will no longer need the Motorcraft ignition box and you will upgrade to the nicer GM style coil (similar to the fabled "TFI" coil swap.)

X2 on not stacking adapters sky high. I don't think there's enough room!

Already have the dizzy installed, so fuel only for now at least. I will head back down to summit and get an open center spacer. 1/2" ought to do it with the mounting plate I think? In related news I'll have a sweet 4350 to holly 4v adapter for sale cheap ;)

Cool. On my way to pick up an open center spacer. Assuming it works I'll let you know and get it out to you this weekend. I used the new studs from it though so just the plate and gasket. Also need to pick up some fuel line while I'm out I guess...

Got the open center spacer on instead of that other adapter. I think that will work much much much better. Going to have to grind a tiny bit I think, but not much. Was making good progress before this storm started blowing in, have the fuel pump all set to go and re-routed the fuel lines. Still working on where to put the wires through for the ECM. I'm thinking through the center of the firewall to mount it behind the dash in the glovebox area. Not sure how much stuff is back there for the QT switch though...

Is that going to work? :-?
Is the spacer covering the secondaries opening?

I'm not sure what you mean. It is sealed on the bottom around the secondaries. It does partially block the secondaries, but not enough to choke off the amount of air that can be drawn in. It is open on top so that air can be drawn in through any/all parts of the manifold. TBI doesn't have primary/secondary valves like a carb, just one set.

Got the fuel pump installed and the fuel lines plumbed up. Quick test shows she flows well and was surprisingly quiet. Pulled the mechanical pump and bolted on the block off plate. I test fit the Throttle body and was able to get WOT without having to modify the adapter, which is great! Went to put the EGR block-off on and discovered it is slightly off, so some drilling and grinding will be in order later. Also have to bend some tubing to help route the fuel to the back of the Throttle body...

On the plus side at least I have stuff to do tonight in the garage

I believe the fuel pump is too far from the tank. Is that the same one I used? Those are really good at pushing, not very good at pulling. Plus, you have it mounted well above the top of the tank. The pump should be mounted as low as possible and as close to the tank as possible. I mounted mine above the transmission cross member. It's now right in front of the tank and pretty much at its lowest point. Also, you could run into an issue with the fuel getting hot as it soaks up engine compartment heat there too.

Clean install though!

Blake and I both have out ECMs mounted above the passenger floorboard. It's a tight squeeze behind the glovebox. I had a pre-drilled hole that I simply widened a bit to fit the harness through and then used a grommet and dum-dum to seal it up really well. It was down below the heater core box.

Yes after looking over some other builds, I am going to have to re-mount it back down by the tank. I hemmed and hawwed and there were these mounting holes already there, and, well, at least it looks good right? ;) Going to try and mount it down where the hard line comes up next to the frame by crossover #1 just aft of the transmission mount. At least I managed to squirt a bunch of fuel everywhere already so there's no getting squeamish about leaking some when I pull it out today. :) On the plus side I got a tubing bender that works awesome on 3/8" steel line.

That makes sense. How did you get at it? Was it easier to lay under the axle or contort yourself around the heater box and exhaust manifold?

I think it is or is so similar it may as well be. E2000 I think. Something like that.
