Ticking motor. About to give up and start parting out

1979 Cherokee AMC 360

Replaced fuel pump since she wouldnt start.
Giving her gas and a fireball came out of the carb.
While adjusting the carb I noticed ticking from both sides of the motor.

This thing has been sitting in my garage all winter since she starting pissing trans fluid. Then one day she decided not to start at all. The floors are rusted out and 90% of the wiring doesnt work. Not to mention all the vacuum lines have been torn to crap and its in e-drive until I can get the trans fluid to stop leaking on me. Anyway if this is going to cost me a butt load of money I'm probably just going to scrap her. Here's a video if anyone could help out.

Not sure if this works but giving it a shot. Sorry the first part is kind of loud.

Sounds like lifter tick. Is the oil full and clean?

Probably not and no. Its been sitting for awhile. I just found it odd that both sides would start all the sudden. I'd been running it off and on for a few hours. You probably know way more than me so before I throw mystery oil or reslone I have 5 qts of diesel oil I was told would help with the motor. Is this stuff ok to use with diesel oil?

Like Stuka said, I'd put my money on the oil not full and causing some ticking in the valve train. Top off the oil (replacing it would be better) and if the sounds persist, I'd look into maybe setting the valve lash. If the valves are too loose they'll make all sorts of noise and the engine will run poorly. It's an old truck that obviously needs some extra lovin, don't give up on it :-bd

Good luck getting it back on track :fsj:

I would do as the upper posts suggested first before doing what I have experienced in the past. it would be easier then the next. I had to do this, will take a half a day or less but 360's are known for having the lifter nuts getting worn out and will loosen. The motor has hydraulic lifters which if the nuts get worn and loose they back of causing the lifters to tick. if you can find the ones that are backing off you can replace them or all of them.

Going to do the oil today after work. I've never messed with lifters / camshafts so that should be interesting. The way people talk about it, its not that difficult if I do have to replace them.

It's not very difficult to replace at all, nor is setting the valve lash, just maybe a little time consuming. I'd recommend (if you don't have one already) picking up a factory service manual for the specs on the valve lash and also a feeler gauge. There are also plenty of videos on youtube of how to set the valve lash if you get stuck or need to see how it's done first. But start with the simple stuff first, the oil change.

Best of luck

So before I do this can you add engine additive like mystery oil etc. to diesel motor oil?

Didn't get a chance to swap the oil yesterday since my radiator started leaking from the center all the sudden. Got some Lucas heavy duty oil treatment to run thru her today though. First entire day off in awhile so going to see what I can get done.

I just picked up a 1988 grand wagoneer yesterday with the same issue. I am curious to see what your oil change does for you. What weight of oil will you use?

Try a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil because it can clean the lifters if they are the issue.
