The good ole T176 tranny

Post by racerx12003r1 »

Hey guys. I'm gonna run a question by yall that I hope someone can answer. What I need is the bolt pattern measurements where a T176 bolts to the bell housing. I tried to get a measurement by hanging below with a tape measure but I dont know if I'm close or not. With a search on the web, I came across a spot on Advance Adapters site that says " The transmission actually shares the same bolt pattern as Ford. This bolt pattern is commonly referred to as the Ford butterfly bolt pattern. It measures 8.5” (top side to side) x 6.3” (top to bottom) x 9.25” (bottom side to side)". My measurements didn't come close to that. I guess if someone has one out or just an empty case to measure from I sure would appreciate it. Thanks to all in advance.

I do not have one to measure, but as far as I know the Trans bolts are the same. Mine is in the truck.

Same thing I have always heard as well. This is the bellhousing people are always claiming to work with the NP435 from Ford trucks.

Sorry I don't have one to measure personally anymore. Been a really long time since I have.

Maybe call Novak? They are usually helpful.

The T176 is a Ford passenger car transmission, made to work with a NP transfer case. It's the Ford Top Loader. What are you trying to determine?

Well, I'm getting ready to do an engine swap starting in a month or so, probably after ECI. I picked up a Lakewood blowproof bellhousing for $75 the other day from a guy on Craigslist and figured I could redrill it to fit my trans. I have had no luck finding a good GM trans that's not an arm and a leg. I'm a pretty good welder, so, I figured if needed, I'd weld in some tabs to extend the bottom so it will bolt up.

Racer, I have an extra loose bell housing for my CJ. This used a T150 trans which also is the butterfly pattern. Also my J10 has a very clean T176 in it in a warm well lit garage. I'll se what my measure ments look like and compre my extra bell housing too. Hopefully the housing is the same and I can get very acurate measurements off it. I'll post back later tonight.

Hey, I apreciate that my friend. I can use all the info I can get. I just found out a local guy has a trans out of his truck He's actually in the same town. I'm hoping to meet up with him and try to make a cardboard template off it. I'd still like to get those measurements from you, just to have some.

Hey Racer, I looked at my stuff and have to agree with Advance/Novak on the bolt pattern. A rectangle with centers 8.5" wide and 6 5/16" tall. The bell housuings were the same and I measured to lose one then. The one thing you might need to consider with your lakewood is the center bore location and size. If it's the same same size then is it in the same position relative to the holes you are using in the housing. Post some pics if you end up moifying it.

You got it Chief. :-bd I'll take a bunch of pictures from start to finish and post them. The only thing about Advance is they say the bolts at the bottom are like 9 1/4" wide. I only measured the bottom and got what you said. Somewhere around 8.5". I didn't pull the floor pan up to measure from the top. I'm gonna meet up with War Wagon this afternoon and borrow his old trans to use as a build template. I figure this way, it should be no problem fitting it up
