J20 Rebuild/Restoration New Zealand

Post by NZJ20 »

Hi guys I have been lurking on this forum for a while and I have finally decided to start a build thread.
A bit of background on my J20 it is one of the few made in Auckland, New Zealand under licence to Jeep Australia. Its a 1982 with a brow, i don't think we ever had the brow less ones here. I bought it unseen from the NZ equivalent of Ebay and had it shipped down from Auckland. I ended up paying about $1700nz which for you guys ls like $1200. The jury is still out as to if that was too much or too little as they don't crop up here every day and I had wanted one for a long time. Heres the photo as it appeared on Trademe, not very pretty.

And here she is when she arrived at my place (ignore my friend standing in front if her blocking the view.

Image

So far i have cleaned up the interior which was about and inch deep in dried dirt and cigarette packets...

Image

And i have stripped and rebuild the motor it came with (350chev unfortunately)

The glass and paint were in pretty poor condition as you can see from this shot

I am in the middle of stripping down the front axle assembly and the frame for a repaint at the moment as well as sorting out a new exhaust as the old one was so rusted through that it basically fell off when I pulled on it. Im very interested to see what you guys have to say about the NZ and Aussie J20s and any help along the way with the build would be much appreciated. Will update as soon as anything more gets done.

It looks pretty good for $1200 to me. How's the rust? No bed, or flatbed?

Post pictures of your progress. :)

Yea I was pretty happy to have it for $1700 my mates and family all think I'm mad though haha.

The rust is odd, the cab etc isn't to bad the floor just needed a small patch, the front quarter panels and flares were pretty much rusted away but I managed to get (with great difficulty) a set of used ones for a box of beer which is not bad considered the only other ones I could find in the country the guy wanted $200 a piece for and were not much better than mine. So compared to some of the rigs I've seen over in your side of the pacific its not bad at all. The main problem is getting spare/NOS parts here as there is almost none.

As for the bed they were only sold here as cab/chassis models, it had a bed on it that was made here in NZ with the typical Kiwi low quality steel of the time so was incredibly heavy and rusted to almost nothing so a custom bed is on the list of things to fab.. (a long way down the list haha)

Sounds like you've done alot of work already…did you take pictures as you did it? We love pictures. :)

I'm surprised you could find any flares at all…they're hard to find here even.

I don't have any pictures at the moment I've mostly just been stripping the front end down to get at the engine. So not to exciting at this point ill be sure to upload photos of progress. On another note I've been having major trouble getting the steering wheel off I have had a steering wheel puller ramped right up trying to do it and broke one of the bolts off in the steering wheel. Is there any trick to this thing or has my steering wheel just been gummed up after being on there 32 odd years?

Welcome and great truck !
I knew that they were exported to Australia as cab and chassis but i was not sure for Auckland, thanks for info
The cab doesn't look indeed as a '82, would you mind providing the numbers on the VIN or ID plates ?

Seems like a good deal to me, even in NZ dollars. :- p

When they're rare like that, you take what you can get....

Welcome!
Nice looking project.
I have had a few nasty rusted on steering wheels.
Try soaking it around the splines for a few days with PB Blaster (or your equivalent, or make your own 50/50 ATF & Acetone).
You can do some tapping with a hammer/punch around the area, just avoid the brute force banging.
It will come free eventually.
