Looking for information in the form videos or picture and text online on how to do a rear quarter panel replacement on my 73 Wagoneer. Both sides have been cut up to the frame line but the rust is at the wheel well inside and out. I am slowly trying to restore back to stock but I need help. I don't want to start cutting till I have a comprehensive step by step on what I'm doing. Any info is greatly appreciated.
Here's what a naked wag looks like under the quarter skin. Any questions just ask…been there done that.
If they were cut like what was done on mine...
Once I removed the quarter skin pretty much everything needed to be replaced, due to how they cut it, and the rust that developed.
Outer wheel houses, cargo floor drops, dogleg inner, etc.
LOTS OF WORK!
Thanks kaisermanfor the heads up and Babywag for the pics and info. I knew it was going to be quite a bit of work so not surprised, after all it is a project, but I will need some sort of guidance. I'll take some more pics of all the damage I can find and let you all take a look and tell me what you think.
Here are some more pics of the rear quarters and the way they are cut and rusted. Let me know what you think. I've priced out outer skins at about 100 bucks per. Hope to keep it to that.

'73 would have had a round rear crossmember.
Post a pic of the brake booster...
I'm pretty close to you. Down in Oceanside.
I love Oceanside man!! Closest surf spot to me!!
Here's some pics of the booster and one of thendataplate. Let me know what you think. I did get a post about it saying that it's a 73' "classic". Don't know if that makes a difference.
Well the body is a '73, but the frame is not '73, and axles are newer.
That is not a '73 brake booster either.
Can you get a pic of the front frame crossmember? one behind front bumper.
Look @ the driver's side frame rail ~ mid way (right where the driver's seat would be above), any numbers stamped in the side of the frame?
At any rate if done right they did you a favor, as the newer stuff is better for various reasons.
Someone probably swapped the body on a newer frame for whatever reason.
Likely the 6lug D44 axles vs. the stock D30/D44 5lug axles.
From what I can tell in your pictures the rust isn't as bad as mine was, but the quarter skins can hide a lot.
They chopped out quite a 'bit from the rear behind the wheels.
If you want it back to original, you're going to need some sheet metal from a donor.
Outer wheel houses or partials for patching, cargo floor drop panels, and of course quarter patch panels.
Not hard but VERY time consuming/tedious work due to how it's all assembled.
The VIN says it's a Wagoneer 4dr "Custom" and was originally equipped w/ a 360 4bbl engine w/ TH400 auto.
Holes in the carpet suggest it had/has a D20 transfer case?
Here go the pics of the front cross member and a couple front axel as well.
I didn't see any numbers on the drivers side frame. Thanks for all the info man!! I'd totally like to get your info via pm. You seem to have a lot of usefull knowledge and are willing to share and that's pretty cool!!
Looks like a '76-'78 frame from what I can see in pics.
Axles are probably same year range.
Beefy front bumper! Could be a '79 frame, but can't tell w/o seeing if they cut the front frame horns off.
In '79 the front crossmember had some "C"'s that extended past the front crossmember for the 1 piece bumper change.

I was going to say the same thing.
Looks like the body is a later than 1974 as well?
Rear inner fender wells in the cargo area were textured metal in 73 & 74.
If God is your co-pilot, you need to switch seats!
Awesome info guys!! Especially Babywag!! Straight up guru!!!
I'm off to work till next Monday so I'll be away from the garage but will get right back to it.
I've got a few oil leaks to address and a carb rebuild, oh yes also California registration!! That should be fun seeing that I have a multi year 70's ride...

YOU HAVE A 1973! get it?
We are just up the road from you in Wrightwood by the way.
YOU HAVE A 1973!!! x2
Nothing else just a simple 'ol 1973 Wagoneer.
Don't say anything about any changes to the vehicle!
Easy for title/reg. Go to AAA if you have a membership for the VIN verification paperwork and pay your fees = DONE.
Or, DMV make an appt. and same…it's a '73 mums the word about anything else.
All they need to see is the firewall plate and the door sticker.
Most of the time people complain about the dspo (dip sh!t previous owner) but in your case it stands for dam smart previous owner. All the benefits of better axle & electronic ignition + no smog to deal with= cali score.

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
Has factory sway bar mounts.
Frame is at least a '77 I would think.
