Texas 79 Wagoneer build

Post by Landman_MTX »

Hey folks! This is kind of an intro/build thread.
My name is Chris and I'm a fairly new resident of Midland, Texas. I scored this never lifted/modified 79' Waggy with 102,000 on the ticker for $900. She runs REALLY, REALLY well and has a straight body, and pretty decent interior and the factory 5 slots with "Jeep" caps. The A/C has been bypassed so I am expecting the worst scenario on that one. Hopefully its just the compressor but I'm never that lucky!
Specs are:
-360
-TH400
-QT
-D44s
-Saggy springs & bald tires

Plans are:
-TBI kit from either Howell or Affordable Fuel Injection
-D20 (either pull from my J truck project or pick up another)
-TT fabworks SOA/SF kit and Hi Steer crossover and 2" lift springs (already have :-bd )
-Rhino kit from my J truck project.
-winch bumper, rear bumper/tire/hilift carrier and a bigger cargo rack
-Some fresh paint and a replacement factory driver side mirror to replace the lowrider ugly thing thats hanging there now...

I really would like to do a WT conversion on her but we'll just have to see how this initial punch list goes.

That is a clean one, congrats. :-bd

I dont recall there ever being an output shaft for the 727 to mate to the QT. Your current trans should be the 400 already. ;)

You know... I didn't have any reason to question the PO becasue it shifts well but after your post I had to crawl under and sure enough... the pan is the familiar TH400 shape. Thanks for prompting me to look jaber! Awesome! :-bd

Always liked that style bucket seats. I had some in an 82 Wagoneer "Brougham" package. Great start!

If you need any qt or axles parts I'm down in Angelo and removing all of mine. If you decide to go off-roading look up West Tex as Crawlers on Facebook. Great group of people and very family oriented.

Jethro. I saw they met up in Midland this evening but I couldn't break away to meet up. If I go with the QT I'll give you a shout. :-bd

Well... I've started sourcing parts. Parts I've picked up so far...
-TT fabworks SOA/SF kit
-Artec Industries Double Shear Hi Steer crossover arms (still not sure if I'll use these or put them on the YJ)
Image
-4" lift springs from Rustys
-Dana 20 t/c
-I was going to stick with the D44s that are on the waggy but I came across a deal on a set of CUCVs re-geared to 5.13 with f/r detroits, and rear discs :D Merry Xmas to me..
They're red right now but I don't care, its whats in them that counts ;)
Image
Since I'm going with tons and 5.13s I also found a deal on some 37" tires

Unfortunately I've been fooling around with house remodeling but as soon as all the carpentry stuff is put up, I'm hoping to sink my teeth into this project.

Check out Hamilton FI over on binder planet. I got mine from him and it is awesome. Haven't had a chance to put it on yet but it looks awesome! Can't wait to install it. Awesome service as well.

Oh my heck that is a great looking Jeep. Are those by chance steel chrome bumpers? If so, would you sell them to me when you go to swap for custom bumpers? Also I'd be interested in your grill if it has no cracks. The previous owner of mine changed the original pig nose out for a razor. I'm not a big fan of the razor grill.

1981 J10 Sportside Honcho - finished/restored - sold
1979 Cherokee Golden Eagle - 5.3L Vortec 6L80E swap - finished/restored - sold
1967 Super Wagoneer - sold, too much work
1978 J10 Golden Eagle - finished/restored - sold
1962 Rambler Classic Cross Country Wagon - current project, wife's daily driver - she'll never let me sell it

Sure! Im not planning on using those and the grill should be in good shape from what I remember. I may be willing to do an even swap for your razor too. When I get to that part I'll set them aside for you. :D

I was told 3.73s but I can't confirm that... at least not yet.
