My Trucks

Post by Jagged »

I sold the Waggy and traded the M715 for a [parts] 1975 J-20 (AMC401, 3/4-ton, redneck lift, 38" SS TSLs):

I picked up a 1978 J-10 "Golden Eagle" (AMC401):

And then because the aforementioned are both rusted out, I picked up a 1987 J-20 (AMC 360)

I don't have pictures of that yet. Short deadline at work and I need to concentrate on it. Needless to say, my neighbors are sure to hate me so it's time to get the two rust buckets stripped down to their parts. There'll be some items for sale when I get there.

That's it for now.

Dude, you suck! 2 401's and an 87 J-20?

I must be living wrong, I never have come across deals like that!

Well, I don't mean to be anticlimactic, but it's not lifted or anything. It's just been restored about 3 years ago. So the body is still in primer and the rust is just surface rust. I'll be fixing that sometime after I can get my garage clear again.

It has a recently rebuilt 360 and 727. It's got the interior bench of a J10. There are flaws, but I also didn't pay an awful lot for it. I watched it come down, and down, and down in price until I could afford to take a look. Then I went and snatched it up for less still.

Engine and interior photos coming soon.

The last picture you can see the hood is pried up on the driver side. The PO's brother did that apparently trying to get into the hood because he didn't know the trick to open it (hood release isn't attached yet.)

There are some things to do, but all in all I have most of the pieces already, and what I don't have I can acquire fairly easily from BJs or elsewhere.

I was thinking of changing the grill back to a razor grill, but I'm almost liking the way it looks the more I look at it.

Really, my goals are fix the little things that are wrong with it now that I know of:

1.) Exhaust tick; i'm going to try one of the gaskets that will conform to a warped header, in case that's the culprit.
2.) Oil dipstick leak.
3.) Shift linkage is a bit wonky as it shifts so quick from 1 to 2 that it barely has time to move.
4.) Do something with the hood release, or not. It's not really bothering me at the moment.
5.) Fix the middle seatbelt so that I can bring the family with me on dump runs. It's always fun to take the family to the dump!
6.) New(er) tires at some point in the next couple thousand miles.
7.) Install a radio, although I never had one in the Wagoneer so it won't really bother me not to have it.
8.) Starter might be grinding a bit. But I have a spare.
9.) Fix the wiring -- brake lights on stops hazards from blinking. Blinkers don't blink regardless of brakes. Rear lights don't always work.

It's true dual exhaust with flowmaster 44s, so has a nice rumble, well, unless you're sitting in the cab in which case you mostly hear the exhaust tick.

It's probably not the shift linkage, but the kickdown linkage that needs adjusting. If you can get a pic of the carb linkage with the air filter housing removed, it should be easy enough to diagnose. It's not a hard adjustment at all.

Yeah, I meant kickdown. But I'm an idiot and wasn't thinking. :)

I've had e-mail conversations with John. Jim I've seen online, of course. But I do not _know_ either of them.

The only person from the forums I've met is REDONE, and only once.

Just curious. I was thinking they'd be a good source of info, and maybe local to you.

Probably, but I'm not worried about it at the moment. Unless these electrical gremlins eat what's left of my soul.

Thanks! I'm digging it. Can't wait to start driving it around. :fsj:

I've always had a soft spot for the trucks.

Looks like a nice start. Image

Come January I'm probably getting rid of all of the trucks. At least parting two of them out, the third I may just sell complete.

Ha. Just can't afford the time at the moment to enjoy this hobby; either the fixing of things or the driving of them.

Wife talked me out of selling ALL the trucks, so I have one in the garage (barely) getting some work done so I can use it to transport some parts around.
