Some days just suck...

Post by Stuka »

So once a month at work we have a corporate meeting, where either the CEO or VP get up and discuss what is going on in the company. Its typically sales related and such, company provides donuts, etc.

Yesterday the CEO got up and said that this was not going to be an easy meeting. Basically stated one of the companies that we partner with in Asia was pulling out of Asia entirely. As a result our income this year was going to take a major hit. He then said because of this, 1/3 of the company was going to have to be laid off.

Now thankfully I was not one of them, but to say I was nervous until I heard that I was safe is an understatement. But even though I was "safe", the team that I work in was hit the hardest, as we are the largest. Lost a lot a very good people that were mostly all good friends. This marks the forth lay off I have survived (The other three were at a previous company). And now of course there is a whole lot more load placed on those of us that are still here, as the work load didn't change any.

So anyway, just needed to vent a bit. Hate to see friends have to go through something like this, but I know they are not alone. Unemployment where I live is nearly 14%. Which of course means finding a replacement job will not be easy. And its rough on a friendship when the friend was let go, and you were not. Some of them are ok with it, but some are now very bitter towards those of us that were not let go.

So yeah, pretty sucky situation :(

I feel for you Stuka, I've been laid off 5 times since 2000 and its rough. I am glad you survived the cuts. Its rough to have to start over. I feel my career has been set back a bit because of it.

My current job has been great, just hit 3 years which is the longest job I have had since 99 and the company has been growing steadily since I started.

I do understand the pain Stuka,

Most of us have been on one end or the other, both are bad. I have been on both...

I too have been on both ends, more on the laid off side. I'm making half what I was 3 years ago. :banghead:

Sorry to hear it. The job market is very tough and batters your moral. I hope everything works out for them, and this will be in my prayers.

Good luck man!

I've been lucky. Been at the same company for 10 years. Survived a few layoffs. My group has never been impacted by layoffs (IT).

Been out of work for over 2 years partially my fault. I figured since I was off I would take advantage of classes offered by the local hall to get caught up on some of the tech. side of my job. Then ran down to Tucson for a job that was supposed to go 15 months and was laid off after 6 days moved back to mom's and have been sitting since. The problem now is at 56 no one will come out and say it but they want younger workers.

Glad you survived the cut Brandon.

Charlie, hope you find something soon. You might take a look at http://jobs.faa.gov/Allfaajobs.htm and see if something is available. I know they've been hiring in this area lately. Look in the technical field at Environmental systems, that'll be where electricians, etc would be.

Glad you survived, I know how you feel I just went through the same thing where I work. We had to wait two weeks after the announcement before they told us who was getting cut. It was not a happy time. Why do companies always do this around the holidays?

I have been through "shrinkage" a few times and it sucks. Hope things hold on there for you Brandon.
