front shackle flipping

Post by firedog »

Found this last year on my woody, that I was getting my front shackles to flip, mostly on a "whooptee" kinda bump...ened up having to hi-lift my front bumper up until they popped back a number of times. are there good banana shackles or solutions to that?

cheers in advance for replies.

front shackle flipping

You can weld in a small piece of round tube, in front of the shackle bracket to prevent the shackle from rotating too far and getting stuck. I'll take a pic when I get home. It works great and is cheap and simple.

You're springs are traveling further then the shackle will allow. Just get longer shackles and it'll fix your problem. Had the same thing happen on my old leaf spring setup 1" longer fixed the problem

Extended shackles change your caster angle and cause twitchy steering. My solution doesn't affect steering and is much cheaper.

If you're going to go to the trouble of welding up stuff, you might as well weld in a triangulated 4 link with coils.

Check out my gear ratio calculator

If you can't fix it with a hammer or duct tape you have an electrical problem.

A piece of angle iron with the corner facing down will also fix the problem. Don't go with longer shackles unless you have to.

Thanks for input. Is everybody using stock shackles? they seem awfully skimpy compared to my super beefy ALCAN 6" BJ's lift springs...I can't even find anyone that makes a banana style beefed up shackle...guess I could make my own.

I guess what makes sense for easy fix would be to sparkle stick a "restrictor"...ie) angle iron, piece of round stock, etc. I'm always looking for a way to improve an existing system...somehow I was hoping someone would point me to a well built banana shackle or something. I think i'll have to do the adding a piece of angle or bar for now, and maybe put making some upgraded shackle in the "stuff I'd like to do if I ever get time for it" hopper!

XJ shackles work if you must change them. There are all kinds of upgrades for those.

Our springs are 2.5" wide, shackles for other vehicles work fine in most cases. Just don't get any that are more than 3/4" longer.
