Spike tv AMC build

Post by jeepguy77 »

I just finished watching this online. They did a ton of oiling mods, and tech with this one, in the end it was making over 400hp.

Oh yeah, and it wasnt a 401 :D

I thought it was a pretty good build, even if they had to rev it over 7g to hit 470hp.

That cam button was a neat trick.

However, here is the anti cam walk trick that I seem to favor...but it seem to be costly and little details

I am sure there are other anti cam walking solutions.

I saw that and I was impressed. So it's prolly around 420hp in a 4x4 at the wheels which isn't bad!

After watching that I dont think I will ever seek out a 401. I could not imagine ever needing more then 300 hp in a Jeep. I REALLY want a project rig now!

They don't make anywhere near that much power stock. Even getting 300hp is going to require mods.

Great motivation for sure, but lest we forget that an engine that will freely spin 7K and still be making power will be lacking where these heavy hunks of love spend most of their time.

300 hp is not a bad goal and can be done fairly reasonably. I think they mentioned that they spent almost 7 grand on that 360. Would love to have a motor like that but its unreasonable on many levels, for my Wag anyway.

I would love that motor in a bogger!! I was supprised with the amount of work they did to it. before any nonchevy got a clean up, cam and intake

Yea, that engine would rock in a bogger! And it just has a  factor that the big three can't touch!

the more I learn about these AMCs the more I love them and want to know more. This makes me look forward to doing my engine swap and then teaching myself to rebuild an engine with my GW still running.

Well I've done some cogitating since this first hit. IIRC a stock 360 was rated around 200HP so to add another 270HP they spent $6,500 that works out to $24.07 PER hp! Now it has been a long time since I built High HP motors but for some reason that kind of seems high to me, if you figure the full 470 HP it works out to $13.83 Per HP a some what better number, but still seems high to me! Anybody built a near stock lately to compare? The last I did was a poor boy build on a 440 Dodge and I'm around $600 in it.

Most 360's made closer to 150-160hp. Even the 4v 360's in the mid 70's only made 195hp.

One of the last high perf engines a friend and I built was a Ford 302 that came out to just over 520hp. Its cost was just over $8k. But I think some of their cost was in machine work on the crank. Also, the Edlebrock heads for an AMC cost more than they do for an SBC or the like.

The last High perfomance engine I built was in the 80s back then the front office took care of the billing! Personally my last was built Hyper build was with a lot of second hand parts I got from trading and bartering and begging! When you ran Fords back in the day you learned how to mix and match components to get what you wanted. Then the 5.0 came out and every thing changed over night it seemed!! No longer did you have to haunt out of the way wreaking yards looking for elusive factory speed parts or spend hours with die grinder reshaping ports on heads, just pick up the phone and with your credit card in hand order and a week or so later the friendly guy in the brown truck dropped your parts at your door! Hmm I think I like the yellow better on this background
