I just purchased an overhead console for my 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the overhead console (lights, compass, etc.) is completely dead. Any tips or recommendations on starting points?
The electronics are exactly the same as the first gen XJ (1984-96).
1997-2001 is different.
The board on these gets hot being up in the roof of the Jeep, and usually takes out some caps, and the voltage regulator.
This is a guy on fleebay that will rebuild the the circuit board. https://www.ebay.com/itm/133897182468
ONE important note.
Do not use a magnetic screw driver on the front screw that holds up the console.
If you do you will likely have to degauss the compass.
If God is your co-pilot, you need to switch seats!
Ive rrpaired many of these.. usually caps blow.. its an easy fix buy new caps solder em in. I replaced all the buttons too for the lights. Not hard.
Sometomes the caps blow and take the traces on the board as well. Fixable but only if you decent at that kinda stuff.
Other possibility is the connector on the floor under the drivers seat and carpet is bad.
I can fix it if you mail it to me for a small fee. I have the caps and stuff still. But first just check the wiring below the seat water gets in it and can corrode it.. and verify you have power at the connector on the roof too
Then take the console apart to get to the circuit board and look at the board and caps.
