Updated.....Fix it list

Post by Snuffleupagus »

Since our purchase of the Wagoneer back in October (Best decision ever….NOT!!!!). I’ve fixed more leaks than there were during the Watergate Inquiries. The Jeep came from Texas. I think it must have sat in the dry Texas heat for quite some time, so every paper gasket on it was cracked and brittle. My section of street looks like a Jackson Pollock painting.

I'm going to start tackling the “other issues“ now. Some are cosmetic, others are an attempt to begin regular preventative maintenance schedule.
Anyone else have this list?

#1. Replace oil pump (It’s going to fail catastrophically soon).
#2 Inspect Heater Blower Motor. ( It squeaks horribly and I think there’s a leaf rattling around in there).
#3 Replace automatic transmission indicator assembly (Indicator goes to either side of -D-)
#4 Replace broken CTO switch. ( Route vacuum hoses accordingly)
#5 Inspect transfer case. (Before first snowfall)
#6 Re-pack wheel bearings. (Just for fun)
#7 Change ATF Filter and Gasket. (Start regular PMCS)
#8 Emissions Vacuum Hoses. ( Again…..Without giving up this time)
#9 Adjust Headlights.(So I don’t blind an on-coming Police Officer……..Don‘t care about anyone else. Note to self……“Moving to top of list“).
#10 Replace carpet and Padding (Smells like “hot fart” and the PO’s Dog).
#11 Re-upholster seats. (No more duck tape sticking to my blue jeans on warm days.)
#12 Replace all window rubbers.
#13 Replace accent trim sections
I'm usually wrong!!! (I'm not proud of it).

My J10 was in a similar state when i got it. It lived in Trona (Mojave Desert) and everything rubber or plastic was completely dry rotted. That took a while to get all replaced.

Only advice I can toss in is just what I've heard from hearsay. Apparently the aftermarket windshield rubber these days is all wrong. If it needs replaced and no amount of armor-all is going to soften it up you might want to look at getting a used one from someone up north somewhere.

Aside from that, props on the heater blower intentions. I opened mine up and it turns out I have to dissassemble all my ducting because it's fully packed with rat nesting and rat poo. It cost nothing but time and makes all the difference in the world, so you can move that up your list to whenever you have time and no money.

Keep at it evil twin!

3/4 resto, rotting faster than I've been fixing it.

How many miles on the Jeep? One thing I'd recommend would be a timing chain set with gears and while you're in there check or replace the distributor drive gears.

It's an 86 w/139,790 miles on it. Yah know........I just had the waterpump off too. People suggested I change the timing chain and spocket while I was at it. People really complain about changing a water pump. I didn't find it that exhausting. Kind of fun really. That being said.....I'd really rather not do it again for some time. (If you now what I mean) Plus after I changed the pump. The whole engine started running really really well. Can't explain it. (Knock on mass duplicated woodgrain film plastic sheeting) As for the distributor drive gears. I'm going to need to change my oil pump soon. So I may end up doing that too.

Water pump on a V8 FSJ is cake really. Lots of room, and you dont have to remove much else to get to it.

Timing chain is more work than on some other V8's though. And certainly more work than the 258 (Which is cake really).

If the dizzy gears are not sloppy, keep the originals. They are probably better quality that most new ones unless you shop matched sets with Bull Tear.
